Local Intelligence.
The 'Canterbury' arrived yesterday evening from Wellington. We have not seen any papers, bit we are informed that there has been no arrival in that port since our last accounts, and consequently no news. Wheat maintains its price, commanding a ready sale at 9s. 6d. cash. Lecture. —We have much pleasure in noticing the third lecture, under the auspices of the Colonists' Society, given in the Town Hall, on Tuesday evening last. Mr. M'Cardell, the lecturer, taking for his theme the connection between Music and Poetry, and illustrating the points of his argument by the voices of the Choral Society, gave us a treat whose attractions, we fear, scarcely any lectui'er who shall follow may hope to surpass. The public showed its appreciation of the subject by attending in greater numbers than usual. At the close of the lecture, Mr. Latter, the president, in proposing a vote of thanks to the lecturer (which was carried with great applause), took occasion to remark upon the requirements of the Society, and showed how an addition to the number of members would add to the advantages which each would secure, and expressed his hope that ■ the list would soon include one hundred names. [ We take occasion to repeat our often-expressed desire for the prosperity of this institution, and to assure those inhabitants of this town who are not members that they will find their reward in becoming so as soon as possible. To forward the movement, we hope that Mr. M'Cardell will not consider his subject yet exhausted, nor forget how easily he can gain an audience for his illustrations. . ■
