OTAGO.
The ' Queen of Perth,' from Auckland direct, arrived in port on the 3rd instant, with a cargo of timber, &c, and we are informed that this vessel is to continue her trips to and from Auckland, with a view to establish a trade between Otago and the Seat of Government. It i^iurthtjr alleged that branches of the Union and Oriental Banks are shortly to be established here.— Witness, August 9. The news of the signing of the treaty of peace was celebrated in Otago by a public holiday, on the Bth instant. The day was unfortunately very wet, and but few out-door demonstrations were made. A public dinner was held at the Royal Hotel, at which thirty or forty gentlemen sat down. The dinner was got up in Mr. Smith's usual excellent style, and the proceedings appeared to give universal satisfaction to the company assembled. — Ibid, August 16.
