Local Intelligence.

By the arrival of the 'Dart' we are in possession of the 'Bed Jacket's' mail, with dates to May 20th. A summary of English and foreign news will be found elsewhere. The ' Eed Jacket' arrived in Melbourne Aug. 11th, and the mail for New Zealand was forwarded to Sydney on the 14th. The ' Dart' left Sydney on the 20th, bringing the mail for this port and Wellington, at which port she called on her way down. We have therefore English papers to the 19th May, from Melbourne to the 14th ult., Sydney to the 20th, and Wellington to the 30th. We have also a ' Taranaki Herald' of the 23rd ultimo. Prom the two latter places there is no local news of importance to extract. We are informed by private letters that the application [for tlw appointment of the Revd. Henry Harper to the Bishopric of Christchurch has been approved of by the Secretary for the Colonies and. by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The appointment has also been accepted with readiness by Mr. Harper. He will be consecrated in England,Jand will leave with his family for this colony probably about the end of August.

The Province of Canterbury is high in the estimation of the emigrating portion of the community in England! The labour market at Adelaide being full, there is more attention given than formerly to this quarter of the Australian Seas. The *' Egmont,'? a ship of above 1,000 tons, is laid on for this port direct, with emigrants under the Government scheme of assisted passages, to sail in July. We understand, that the energies of our whole^, Customs staff were taxed a whole day last weel:|§fc to estimate the duties leviable upon 2000 cocoa-^ nuts and a small consignment of oi'anges, ex ' Dart,' by measurement, according to the New Tariff. Fortunately, importations of these fruits are neither large nor frequent.
