WELLINGTON.
The last month, during which our commercial article has been omitted through circumstances which'we could not control, has not presented any very noticeable features.' The Cheetah and Lady Grey have arrived from Sydney with assorted cargoes (including a rather large supply of tea and sugars) ; also the Jane, from Melbourne, with passengers and a small cargo oi' wines and spirits; the ar P> fr°m Hpfa'art Town,, commanded by our old
friend Captain Clark, with a cargo of Tasmanian. produce and guano; and, more recently, the William and Alfred, from Sydney. The news brought by the last named vessel, respecting the prices of wheat and flour in the Sydney market, has given a ■little elasticity to the produce market here ; and should the rates be sustained, it will prove a decided and seasonable boon both to our fanners and to the natives, who have, it is believed, considerable stocks of grain on hand.
Yesterday, subsequently to ?he arrival of the William Alfred, Messrs. It. J. Duncan & Co. obtained 22/. per ton for a very inferior sample of flour, and 251., we have heard, was obtained by another firm for a better sample ex Mary Thompson from Nelson. A rather large transaction in wheat was also effected, 1400 bushels having been sold for exportation at about 9s. 6d. per bushel. On the whole, we believe that the opinion expressed in our last article, ' that in the midst of the commercial ordeal through which we are passing there are substantial reasons for consolation and hope,'has been borne out by subsequent facts. Of the large cargo brought by the Libertas we know that a great portion has already changed hands. Consignments of bottled beer,. ale, and porter, in hhds., wines and spirits, oilmen's stores, nails, and currants, have been placed at paying rates; and though dealers are still cautious and money scarce, yet we think sales are more easily effected than they were a few weeks since.— Spectator Aug. 23.
