WELLINGTON.

The Master of the Emu has handed' us copies of the Wellington papers to the 16th' inst.,. which the mail did., not bring. The election of five additional members for the city of Wellington had taken place with not the smallest excitement. There were six candidates'; one retired before.the poll, and

another, Mr. Kelham, the acting Treasurer, having been proposed without his knowledge or consent,: resigned immediately on election, so that the number is not now complete. The following paragraph contains almost all the news from Auckland. By the Overland mail this morning we have received Auckland papers to the 19th tilt., and the Taranaki Herald,-oi the 2nd inst. The Zingari arrived at Taranaki the Ist inst., and sailed the same day for Man.ukau. The following is from the Taranaki Herald, of the 2nd inst: " The Margaret brought no mail, and we are indebted to private courtesy for the files of the Southern Cross to the 29th ultimo. Thebusiness of the General Assembly appeared to be drawing to a close. On the 26th' Mr. Stafford moved that the House be called over on Friday, Aug. Ist, Tuesday, Aug. sth, 'and and Wednesday, Aug. 6th, and that any members not then present, and who had not obtained leave of absence iShould be sent for by the sergeant-at-anns. The motion was urged by the Ministry on the ground that, to get the business done, a suspension of the •^Standing orders would be necessary, which requires the presence of a greater number of members than attended under ordinary circumstances. The motion, after a few remarks, was agreed to. The Zingari sailed from here yesterday afternoon/— Independent, Aug. 9.

Wellington Market —On Thursday, the second Monthly Market was held in Wellington, at Messrs. Bethune and Hunter's stockyard, in Manners-street. Several horses and head of stock were on sale ; but as, owing to the election, and the trial in the Supreme Court, the amount of business yvas rather limited, we refrain from giving any quotations. Farm and dairy produce were also brought to market by some of the farmers from the country districts. Two lar^e and convenient buildings, each about sixty feet long by twenty feet wide, have been recently erected by Messrs. Bethune and-Hunter, and are well adapted-for the sale of dairy produce, vegetables, and (during the summer.) of fruit.; while the cattle pens offer extensive accommodation for the sale of etock of different kinds. Owing to the liberal spirit and enterprise displayed by Messrs. Bethune and Hunter, an attempt has been made to supply. what has always been felt to be a great social want in Wellington,—a good market in a convenient situation. The facilities now offered are, in every respect, very comple'e, and we hope the farmers in the neighbouring districts will.show a readiness in availing themselves of them. We shall be glad to : find that the hint thrown out in our-:late notice of the Hutt Market has been acted upon by them, and that the. small farm settlers especially, living in the vicinity of the town, are turning their attention to the rearing of poultry, and supplying the Settlers in Wellington, the shipping in harbour with eggs, b^er, vegetables, and other produce. We are persuaded, if the market is well supplied/it will be well supported, and that the farmers will soon find their account in it. , We hope, for supplies of this description, it may-soon be a weekly market, and Aye think we shall best promote this end by giving ail publicity to its meetings, .and drawing the attention of the "public'' to the subject.— Spectator Aug. 16° :
