OTAGO.

The " Sea Bird" has brought us a lile of the Otago Witness to the 26th July. The Education question is voluminously commented on both in Leading' articles and correspondence. In recording the death by drowning, while crossing* a river, of a Mr. M'Kecbnie, on the 11th July, the Witness m:«kes the following judicions comments. " Painful as it may be to the friends of the deceased to make any remark upon the cause of this fatal accident, we feel it to be our duty to call attention to the absurdity of croesing rapid streams while they are swollen. Scarcely a 14 heavy fresh" occurs, but we have to record accidems of a similar nature to the one we have just mentioned. About jsis months since we noticed the fact of a youth's having, met with his death in attempting to cross the Molyneux Tiver during a flood. Surely time is not so very valuable in New Zealand as to make it justifiable For people to peril their lives to avoid a delay of a day. Most of these rapid and dangerous streams subside as quickly as they rise, anl crossing them at one time may t».a dangerous feat; in a few hoars afterwards the same thing maybe done with perfect safety.—-July 19. By the arrival of the -'Star" from the Bluff we learn that the " William Hyde," from Newcastle, was at theJßluff, landing the remainder of a cargo of 2000 sheep, of which she has lost about 200 on her passage down. Of the Bluff we have nothing to communicate, except that this thriving out-port of our province was progressing in the usual quiet and steady manner, evidenced by the continued landing of cargoes of stock. The " Star" had proceeded 16miles up the New River, thus saving a considerable sum to the settlers of that district.— July 12. t DUXEDIN MARKETS. ..■ Retail Prices Current, July ' 26, 1856.
