Ex "Harry," Etc., BOY'S and women's strong boots Bellies, btites, and calfskin Arrow root, sardines Red case gin, J.D.Z.K. F. Noble Campbell & Co. Oxford st., Bth August, 1856. 896 c To the Electors.of tbe Cnristennrch Country District. f^i ENTLEMEN,—-The Fourth Session VDC of the General Assembly is now upon the eve of closing, and, as circumstances have arisen which render my absence from the colony for a short time imperative, I take this opportunity of addressing you for tbe purpose of informing you that I have resigned my seat in the House of Representatives. I thought it my duty to do so, to provide against the contingency of my not having returned previous to the sitting of.the next session, and the more so, as parties are so equally balanced as the House is at present constituted. However, yeu will perceive by referring to tbe divisions upon all great questions during this session, that my vote alone has frequently kept a Ministry from falling. I regret that my colleague (Mr. Hall) did not act in conjunction with myself. Had he done so, it would have prevented two-thirds of tbe session being wasted in angry and fruitless discussion. It is gratifying to me,!,though, to know that I have^ssisted in obtaining Responsible Government- —in permanently adjusting tbe public burdens of the colony—in procuring to the provinces the sole control of their own Waste Lands—in greatly improving the Administration of Justice, —as also in securing an improved home as well as intercolonial postal communication ; several other measure?, also, of a most useful nature, have received lhe sanction of the House. * It only remains for me to say that I have done everything which I believed to be conducive to the welfare of the colony, without infringing the just rights of Canterbury. I have lent myself to no party —I have steered my course conscientiously and disinterestedly. I deeply regret that I am so soon compelled to resign tbe honorahle trust you have reposed in me. Allow me to return you my warmest thanks for the confidence you placed in me, and to assure you that, should it be your pleasure t 0 re-elect me upon my return to Canterbury, I shall he most happy to give you my humble services. I have tbe honor to remain, Your most obedient servant, 895 a 13 Dingley Askham Brittix.
