Ptblic Meeting. —A public meeting was held on Thursday evening at the Town Hail to take into consideration an offer of the government, to give the labour of the pri»n working gang for the improvement of ,the town ; on condition that the superintendence of the gang, and extra rations for thi me., should be supplied by the inhabitants. R. Latter, Esq., was moved to the , c/iair. The meeting having been called by \ Messrs. Bayfeild, Davis, and Alport, these 'gentlemen explained the nature of the offer which had been made to them from the Government, through one of the Executive Council (Mr. Hamilton); who had afterwards intimated that the offer, if not shortly accepted, would be withdrawn. They had therefore taken the trouble of canvassing a considerable portion of the town to raise subscriptions for that purpose, and, being extremely successful, had called a meeting to give the undertaking a public character. A committee being suggested, after some desultory remarks from various quarters, and a discussion more particularly as to whether the actions of such committee should or should not be under the direction of a general meeting, the following names were put to the meeting and approved v!': Messrs. Bayfeild, Davis, Grubb, Stout, Gei\ Lingard, Allwriglit, Donald ; Latter, Treas-u <-r, and A. J. Alport, Secretar} 7. Tlu committee was directed to commuiiicnt; with the Provincial Engineer, and under hi = advice, to take such steps as seemed requisi;.; for using the prison labour to the benefit of the town. Thanks being voted to the chairman, the meeting then separated.
