White, & Co. « We are indebted to the mate of the Gratitude for the following account of her protracted passage from this port to Otago, and back. We quote his own words. " Having left Port Victoria on the 19th May, we got as far as 1740 East, when, on the nig-lit of tiie 20th, we were caught by a heavy southerly gale, which lasted without intermission for fourdays, during which time, being obliged to heave to,"we were driven as far to the Northward as Castle Point. "In the course of 3 days, we were again as far South as Timaru, when again experiencing southerly gales, we bore up for Akaroa. " After lying there 4 days, we again proceeded, and after having encountered several strong: southerly gales, which were generally succeeded by light northerly winds, we got within 12 miles of Tairoa Head, when we were again driven bjick by strong adverse winds. We succeeded in reaching Otago on Saturday, June 3 Bth, after a passage of 16 days from Akaroa, and 30 days from Port Victoria. Circumstances which it is unuecesary to state here, prevented our continuingour projected voyage to The Bluff. <c We had, we are happy to state, a good run up from Otago, not having been many more hours in returning, than we were days in going down."
