PRODUCE CIRCULAR.
The arrival of-wools, both coastwise and by road, have I been limited during the week, but the imports from New Zealand have been considerable. The greater portion of the latter has been submitted 10 public competition, and the results must bo satisfactory to the importers. The condition and quality of thn wools forwarded this season are better than in any previous year, being freer from carrot seed aud more care has been taken in the wash and mode of getting up the fleeces. Mr. Se well's retirement from the Provincial Council of this Province, is announced in, another column. The vacancy thus created in the representation of the town of Lvttelton has caused some sensation, and the names of two gentlemen are rumoured about as desirous of the honor of filling the vacant seat. In a few days,-no doubt, the usual appeal to theelectors will be made.
The half yearly examination of the Lyttelton Grammar and District Schools took place on Friday this week, in presence of the Venerable Octavius Mathias, Archdeacon of Akaroa, and Dr. Donald, who acted as Government Inspector. The examiners expressed themselves satisfied with the progress evinced by the scholars in the different departments. The following- prizes were awarded :—Grammar School, (Ist class.) G. Dobson. 2nd do., C. Cryer. Distract Schools—Boys, (Ist class,) R. Hughes. 2nd do., H. Fisher. Girls—lst class, H. Baker; 2nd do., Julia Grubb. Certificates of approbation were also given to others who were considered to merit it.
