The Lyttelton Times. Saturday, June 14.

The settlers of Canterbury are now begining to have some claim to boast themselves as having had colonial experience, and although such experience may in the eye of our Australian neighbours, appear as relating to a mere village expeiiment on a very small scale, extending over a very short time, and affecting contemptibly small interests; vet we are sufficiently sanguine to hope, nay firmly believe, in the certain and rapid progress of Canterbury. We are sensible of the fact, that sundry errors in judgment lhat to practical minds have hitherto evidenced themst Ives in our state management, need immediate correction ; but believe, nevertheless, that it would require an extraordinary development of stupidity in legislation to stifle thej real capability of this Province. A glance at the statistics of Canterbury is quite sufficient to revive the spirits of those who may suffer under the temporary pressure of the recent fall in neighbouring markets A perusal of the tale of the recent rapid growth of population, increase of flocks and herds, extension of enclosures, and our additional dwelling-houses, and"the material progress *of our commerce, will convince most of us that a comparison of this adopted land with our mother country will, on recurring to our experience of life in each, prove very much in favour of Canterbury, where most of us must in candour, and nearly all of us readily admit, that " we have done better thxn we expected" on leaving England.
