Correspondence.

To the Editor of the " Lyttelton Times."

Sir, —Will you allow me to call attention, through your columns, to the extortionate price now charged by the inn-keepers, for (what they cali) a feed of oats. For an absurdly small feed, we have actually to pay the price of very nearly half a bushel! I m&y be told, that this is to cover the expense of stables and ostlers ; but I remember very well when we had to pay eighteenpence for a so-called " feed," and that the price was raised to two shillings, in consequence of the rise in the price of oats; now that oats have fallen to their old price, or even lower, the innkeepers show by no means corresponding alacrity in making the price of a feed in some degree proportionate to that of a bushel of oats. Even with a view to their own interest, I believe that this is a most foolish policy of the innkeepers, for many a man who grudges two shillings for a miserably scanty feed, would most willingly give his horse plenty of oats, could he only secure a liberal feed at a fair price. In the hope that one public grumble may do more good than a score of private ones, I remain, sir, your obedient servant, Traveller.

Birth.—June 4ih, at Papanui, the wife of C. J. Perceval, Esq., of a son. — At Lyttelton, on Friday, the 6th inst., the wife of F. Noble Campbell, Esq., of a son.
