Local Intelligence.
The Council re-assembled for the transaction of business on Wednesday last, the 2lst instant. The Speaker went to prayers at 11.30. a.m.
The Provincial Secretary gave notice to move the house into committee on Thursday on the Waste Lands Regulations ; and that when in committee he should move that the clauses 67 and 68 be expunged, and that the clauses which have been published in the Gazette in his name be inserted in lieu of them.
Mr. Ba-Ricee gave notice that he should move the adoption of the amendments standing: in his name in the Gazette.
Mr. Barker also gave notice on the part of Mr. Bray, to move the adoption of the amendments standing in that gentleman's name.
Mr. Ollivieb gave notice that he should move for copies of any correspondence beween the Government and the contractors, for the Stunner Road, and respecting a sum of £500 laid out for plant for the road between Sumner and the Ferry. The House then adjourned till Thursday, at 5 p.m.
On Thursday, May 22, the House, according to adjournment, met again. The Speaker went to prayers at 5 p.m. Mr. Olliviek presented a petition from Christchurch, in favour of the Government proposal, in regard to the pre-emptive rights.

Mr. Hamilton presented a similar petition from Lyttelton, which, was also read and received.
A slight discussion ensued as to the course of procedure to be adopted in bringing forward the business of the evening-. Mr. Mookhouse proposed the adjournment of the debate to that, day three months, as it was probable that the General Government at Auckland were engaged on the land question, and it would be well to await their decision.
Capt. WesT-ENRA seconded it. The house divided, when the motion was lost by 9 to 6,

The debate, which ensued, was very long, the house not rising till 12 o'clock. The lateness of the hour prevents our giving a lengthened report in to-day's impression. There were several divisions in the course of the evening, which resulted in each case in a majority for the Government, with slightly vai-ied numbers. Finally, the house divided on the clause to be substituted for clause 67, when it was carried by 11 to 7. The Chairman reported progress, when the Speaker resumed.
The order of the day was discharged, and the Notices of motion resumed.
Mr. Rhodes gave notice that he would ask the Government concerning the works at the Rakaia.
Mr. Hamilton gave notice that he would move that the house do take into consideration the desirability of taking steps for the appointment of a resident judge for this Province. The house then adjourned till Friday. On Friday the House met again. The Speaker went to prayers at 11 a.m. The clause proposed to be substituted for clause 68 of the Waste Land Regulations was discussed. A proposal of Mr. Dampier's to retain the first part of clause 68, was negatived by 9 to 2. ° The Government proposition was carried.
Dr. Barker's proposed alterations were lostMr. Bray's motion for compensation was not brought forward. A message was read from His Honor the Superintendent. The house was prorogued by message from His Honor to the 3rd of March, 1857. Thomson, the beasts fetched a g-ood price, even more than would have been obtained some short lime back. The stags fetched £57 per pair : working bullocks, £50 the pair. On the whole, 29 head of cattle realized £597 lOs., or, on the average, £20 12s. each.
