DISCOVEKY 01? ADDIX/TONAI, SIIEEP Country.—At the time Mackenzie was captured, a report was cuvrent that an extensive plain existed beyond the gorge of the snowy mountains through which Mackenzie was travelling1 when taken by Mr. Sidebottom, We understand that further search has confirmed the truth of this report, and that a plain of immense extent has been discovered, capable of depasturing sheep. We hope to be enabled to wive further particulars in a short time.
We accidentally omitted to notice at the time of its delivery, Mr. Fyfe's lecture, delivered before the Colonists' Society, on Tuesday week last. The subject was a continuation of his previous lecture on the early inhabitants of Britain. In this lecture Mr. Fvfe traced the Hstory of the Britons from the departure of the Romans to the establishment of the several Saxon Kingdoms, commonly termed the Heptarchy, giving an account of their religion, their customs, and the political condition of the people both before and after the infatuated Vorrigprn sousht the aid of the Saxon " saxes," as a defence against the irruptions of the Picts and Scots. Mr. Fyfe's lecture displayed careful historical study, while his remarks upon the leading: features of the period proved him to be more than a mere collector of dates. The meetng\ which was a large one, warmly applauded the lecturer.
A class has been formed in Lyttelton. in conjunction with the Colonist's Society, under the title of the ' Lytfelton Discussion and Mutual Improvement Class.' We hope it will be found useful.
