At the time when a fear too generally prevails that the larger public works of the Province may come to a deadlock, it is gratifying to be enabled to chronicle the progress which the men under the control of Mr. Hughes are making O n what is termed the '• Great South Road." The imaginative may indeed picture the Government '■ four-in-hand" traversing this load en route for Otago, while another well-comparisoned " turn-out", similarly bedizened with the royal arm*, branching off at the spur above Cass's Bay, curving this valley, and passing through a tunnel opening out on Wilson's bridge, dashes through the capital on its way to Nelson. They may even picture in their mind's eye. the professional lift of the whip, and the scientific gathering U p of the reins by the " Wellers" of the day, as the "leaders" pass each oilier on their separate ways intent. But ours is a simpler '.ask. We have only to record the fact that a good bridle-path has been cut from Lyttelton to' the native village of Raupaki; while, to a non-pro-fessional eye, there appears no really practical difficulties in the way of converting the present bridlepath into a really good cartroad, when the circumstances of the colony will allow. The road passes through Raupaki, disturbing several boundaries "of individual properties owned by the natives ; but, as we understand, no obstruction was offered on their p«r rt to the arrangements proposed by the Provincial engineer. How far the road will be continued this season, or what "w ill be its precise route, we have not been able to ascertain.
