SYDNEY.
The papers from New South Wales are almost entirely taken up by or.c allabsorbing- subject, the general election for the new parliament. The election for the City of Sydney resulted in the return of the four liberal candidates. The numbers polled were as follows:—Cowper, 3073 ; Parkes, 3057 : Campbell, 3041 ; Wiltshire, 2901 ; Plunkett. 2800. The rejected candidate was Attorney-general under the old system. The election for the Sydney Hamlets had also closed, the successful candidates being Messrs. Stuart A. Donaldson, and Daniel
Cooper. North Australian Exploring Expkdjttok.—The v Monarch" and " Tom Tough," the vessels chartered to convey the horses and other live stock for the expedition, Lad successfully performed the voyage, and landed the stock at the Victoria river, North Australia, having only lost two horses. Potatoes. —A larsre parcel of New Zealand Potatoes had been disposed of at auction here at an average^ rate of three pounds per ton.
