It has also been decided tl at the schoolmasters are to charge fees from tie <oholars, which fees are to go towards the 6cb > ilmasters' salaries, the head teacher's minima n salary being £200 and the others £100 each; and should the school fees collected in any district exceed the amount of the salary, the surplus is to be retained by the sch"olmaster, as an inducement to ensure energy and attention in the instruction of his pupils." The cost of government in Otago increases proportionally with that of the other settlements. "The debates in the commiitee of supply," continues;) the Witness," have been warm and long. The attempt to restrict the expenditure on salaries to the amount voted last year has failed. The Superintendent's salary has been voted at £400, his clerk £130; the Solicitor and Treasurer £300, his clerk £75. £lofor the Auditors was, at their own request, struck out. Except in the last instance, a whole day's cavilling at the expenditure on salaries resulted in a saving to the province of £5, the unfortunate crier being the only officer over whom the Executive did not think it necessary to spread its protecting wings. £150 was voted for the West Taieri road, and £25 to erect guiding posts over Flagstaff. £300 was placed at the disposal of the Executive for the repair of main roads. £150 was voted for surveying and buoying he Upper Harbour, and to pay a pilot. £30 as a reward for the boatmen who found the Government chest which was stolen was also voted. The item £1000 for two packet ships was altered after a long debate upon the necessity and justness of inviting tenders for this and all public works, to £500 as a bonus for the Gil Bias to run as a regular trader between this port and Melbourne. A sum of but the house preferred expending £170 to patch up the present building. A discussion took place £850 was proposed by the Execuiive fora gaol, on the items amounting to £880 for the purchase of the Taieri Ferry, which was ultimately passed. £21 was voted to • the Returning Officer. The rest of the items, as stated in the printed Estimates, were adopted. The main part of the business of the Council has been got through, and the session will probably close about the middle of the ensuing week.' The Education Bill, a Road's Bill, ami a Ferries' Bill, had all been adopted by the Council.
