THE BATTLE OF KARS.
The lavalide Russe contains General MonraviefFs account ot the engagement at Kars. The General in his report, states that having been informed that tlie Turkish troops had received reinfoicements in the neighbourhood »>f Bauuun, and that the enemy proposed affecting a movement simultaneously, advancing from Erzerouin on Ears, iie resolved to attack the latter fortress on the 29ili. Three columns were told off for the purpose ; and there were also formed intermediate by columns, under Lieutenant General Prince Gagarine, and also a general Teserve. Lastly, a special detachment was to act according to special arrangement. The columns advanced to the assault in the greatest order, and with the greatest intrepidity. The attack of Major "General Bazine was crowned with success ; hut unfortunately, almost at the commencement of the onslaught, several of the principal chiefs, ami commanders under their orders, were wounded. The result was that the unity of the operations were broken, and the most brilliant efforts, , during a sanguinary contest lasting- several hours, could not re establish it. General Mouravieff. having convinced himself of this, caused the reserve !o advance, and under its protection, ordered the assaulting column to affect their retreat. The obduracy with winch our troops foti-h: is beyond ail praise. During the combat tuay took from the Turks fourteen different flags and pennons, and either spiked or dismounted several of their guns. Amuigst our generals three are grievously wounded, and one less danger.ms'y. The blockade of Kars is reestablished as before. [Considerable apprehensions were still felt for ihe safety of Kars. 0.-net- Pasha and another Turkish General with reinforcements had been sent to its relief, but the ssate of the roads Wdu.'d, it was feared, prevent th"ir reac'nin"- the neighbourhood in time to effect a diversion.
