To the Editor of the Lyltelton Times. Sir, — Permit me to inform the public through the columns of your paper, that I did not abandon the steamer " Alma," as insinuated in to-day's " Standard." After trying every earthlj' means in my power to save her from destruction, in which I partiaily succeeded, I solicited the aid of the Government, who have entered into arrangements by which more powerful machinery than I could possibty command will be brought to her rescue, which I fondly hope will prove successful, when I trust to have her again made seaworthy, and put on the berth. To those gentlemen whose sympathy I have had in the matter, I would embrace this opportunity of returning thanks. I remain, Sir. Yours obediently, J. E. Thacker. Christ church Jan. 17, 1856.
