WOOL SALES.

The third public sale of colonial wools for the present year has just been brought to a close, and has proved the most important which h.is taken place in this country for many years. The catalogues comprised ibe following viz. • — Australian, 14,771 bales ; South Australian 8180; Port Phillip, 32,673: Van - Dieman'a Land, 12,567; Cape, 6389 ; New Zealand,49| • Swan River, 1042; East India, -2881; iut.il; coloi.ial, 78 994; sundries and foreign 4330* total, 83.324 bales. "There never hud been [sajs Mr Edinborouch in his circular] so important au event in the wool trade as these sales, being the most considerable ever known- the proportions of Port Phillip, Adelaide and Van Dieman's Land being unusually increased, the quantity from these three colonies being 10 000 bales more than offered this tithe last year,'and upon all descriptions, included 20,000 bales. The importers, in addition, very prudently arranged Jto hold over about 8,000 bales that had arrived in lime to be offered. Stocks generally being very small, and wool being much warned for immediate use, the sales opened with great spirit at an advance of Id. per Ib. which with few exceptions, was maintained to the close, foreign buyers acted very freely, and about ld,ooo hales were taken for their account. Sydney wool was much sought after and commanded higher rates. Cape Also was equally fortunate and deservedly, being much improved in quality, character, and getting up. Fust Phillip and Vau Dieman's Land was generally well got up, and rated high for good qualties ; but hravy and ill-washed sorts, of which there were a large proportion, did not meet with the same competition ; the same remarks apply -to the Adelaide flocks. East India advanced Viom 4a. or a Id. peril), upon good white and yell"w ; grey and-mixed were no higher.— London c orrespondent of the Sydney Empire.
