THE ROADS.

There was a very large meeting of the inhabitants of Christchurch and the surrounding districts at the Golden Fleece Hotel on Thursday last, for the purpose of considering the state of the roads, at which Mr. Thomas Wilkinson, of the Lower Lincoln road, presided. We regret that our report did not come to hand in time to give the proceedings in full, we will endeavour to do so in our next. The following resolution was carried by a large majority, " This meeting desires to record its unqualified disapprobation of the course pursued in reference to the public works of the Province. The state of the roads, particularly the North road and the Lower Lincoln Road, upon both of which there was pretty considerable traffic, is not only such as to impede communication with Christchurch, but is actually dangerous. It is further of opinion that there is not sufficient reason to justify the delay which has taken place in the execution of these works, in accordance with two distinct votes of the Provincial Council." An amendment was proposed but was lost after a very stormy and long discussion. Another resolution followed appointing a deputation to wait upon His Honor upon the subject. The deputation appointed at the meeting on Thursday last, waited upon His Honor the Superintendent on Saturday, and had an interview with him to present the resolution agreed to on the state of the roads. His Honor entered very fully into the question, and submitted a carefully prepared statement of the Provincial accounts, made up to the 24th ult., shewing what amounts had been expended in furtherance of the votes of the Council. After a full and very satisfactory explanation had been given, the deputation stated that they would convene

another meeting to hear this explanation, and requested that His Honor would attend, which he consented to do. The meeting was then fixed for Tuesday evening, the 11th inst., at 7 o'clock, at the Golden Fleece.
