THE RIVER, THE ROAD, AND THE RAIL.
Considered in relation to the Export Trade of the Canterbury Settlement. "If a country has tho resources of wealth within it, and produces something which is exportable, shipowners will always Bnd the moans of doing businesi with it, though it bo transacted in a somewhat exposed roadstead and at tho risk of losing an anchor."—Fox's Six Colonies of New Zealand. The following remarks have been written to supply the want of accurate information on the subject of the Communication between the Port and the Plains which, it-may be fairly said, that there exists an equal amount of interest and ignorance. For the correctness of the statements here made, the writer holds himself personally responsible ; the suggestions offered will be taken simply for what they are worth. E. Dobson, C.E. ■ Christclnirch, October 20th, 1855.
