LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The annual gathering* to commemorate the inauguration of tbe Lyttelton Choral Society was held in the Town Hall, Lyttelton, on Friday evening, the sth inst. About 50 of the members of the Society, and their friends assembled. In the course of the evening, the report of the committee was read, giving in detail the proceedings of the Society during the past year, from which we extract tbe following particulars: "During.the year, there has been a jjross amount of £87 received for concerts alone. The sum of £15 was remitted to England for the purchase of new music, £33 was subscribed to the Patriotic Fund, £23 was handed to the Conductor as a token of respect and sincere rega-d, £15 has been paid for rent to date, and other smaller sums have been expended for candles, printing, &c. •'These statements will explain to a certain extent the position the Society has attained to in the public estimation, and may serve as a stimulus to future exertions. "The great want of the Society, at present, is a Pianoforte. With what has been subscribed, £16 155., aud a further subscription which it is intended lo gather, and a special concert in aid of the fund, it is hoped that the next anniversary will see tbe Society in tbe possession of an instrument which it so much needs. "The Committee are pleased to know that an elementary class is about to be opened, which it is hoped will establish the Society on a more extended basis, as it is believed that there are many who would become, both from their example, and from their natural capabilities, valuable adjuncts to the body."'
