LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

The following appointments are notified in a Gazette of the 6th iust. ; — Mr. James Rule to be Inspector of Sheep, in the place of Mr. J. T. Parkinson resigned; and Mr. Donald Mundy, to be Clerk to the Bench, at Lvttellon. We beg to call the attention of our readers to the advertisement respecting the Lyttelton. Savings' Bank. This institution was opened on the 29th of September, and we are happy to say with every prospect of success. The following petition (already numerously signed) will be presented to the Provincial Council. Copies are in circulation at Lyttelton, Christchurch, Kaiapoi, and Akaroa, though there will be scarcely time, before the prorogation of the Council, to append the signatures from the latter two places. .^_ " To the Honorable the Provincial Council of the Province of Canterbury: — We, the undersigned, having reason to fear that the plan for the construction of a tramway between Christchurch and Sumner will be submitted to your honourable house, aud that you will be called upon not only to divert to this object the funds already voted to the Cart Road between ihe Port and the Plains, but also to contract a Provincial debt for tbe same purpose, humbly pray your honourable House neither to give your sanction to diverting any of the funds already appropriated to the completion of the Cart Road io auy other puipose, nor to incur any such debt, which your Petitioners believe would be injurious to the Province."
