LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

A meeting oi' the Lyttelton Colonists' Society was held on Tuesday last, the 14th inst., Dr. Donald, President, in the chair. After the minutes of the preceding meeting had been read and confirmed, on the proposition of Vlr. Spowers, it wasa„:ieed to alter the title of the Society to " Lyttelton Colonists' Society and Literary Institution." The Chairman then read several letters relating to the demand of the College for the hooks in the Society's possession. After a lengthy discussion it was, agreed—"That the discussion be adjourned until the college authorities are prepared with some definite proposition." A desultory conversation then ensued upon a suggestion of Mr. Latter's as to the desirability of increasing the library. A resolution was carried—"To appoint a special committee to whom it shall be referred to consider means for increasing the library," to consist of the President, the Vice President, the Secretary, Rev. G. Cotterill, Messrs. Alport and Latter. Annual Subscriptions to the amount of £15 4s. 6d., were promised by parties in the room.

We print a copy of the Church Property Trust Amendment Ordinance, referred to in an advertisement in another column : — WHEREAS an Ordinance was passed by the Superintendent and Provincial Council of the Province of Canterbury, entituled "The Church Property Trust Ordinance,'' Session 2, No. 3, and whereas it is expedient that the said ordinance be amended :— Be it therefore enacted, by the Superintendent of the said Province by and with the advice of the Provincial Council thereof, as follows :— That clause 1 of the said recited Ordinance be i-ppealed, and in lieu of it be substituted the following :— In interpreting this Ordinance, the term *' Bishop" shall be held to mean the Bishop of the Church of England for the time being of the Diocese in which the Canterbury Settlement may he from time to time included, the term "Incumbent" shall be held to mean the principal clergyman for the time being officiating under the license of the said bishop at or in the principal church, chapel, or place used for Divine Worship within any "district to-be created under this Ordinance, the term ''■district shall be held to mean any district to which a, clergyman is licensed Jo cure [of souls by the Bishop, or other

competent authority, the term " Trustees" shall be held to mean the body of trustees intended to be constituted by this ordinance, tbe term " Canterbury Settlement" shall be held to include the territory or block of land set apart for the purposes of the said Canterbury Association under the authority of the said referred lo Act of Parliament of the 13th aud 14th years of the reign of her present Majesty, and set forth and described in the schedule to the said act, together with all lands comprised within the limits of such block, the term " Church" shall mean the branch of the reformed Catholic Church planted in the said settlement "in communion with the Church of England by law' established, the term" member of the Church" shall mean and include any male person being cf the full age of twenty one years, who shall, at least thirty days before the day of election have subscribed a declaration to the following'effect before some justice of the peace or the minister of the district —"./, A. M., do solemnly declare thai I am bona fide a member of the Church of England, and of no other co-rim union." That clause 4 s of the s„id recited ordinance be repealed, and in lieu of it be substituted " The bishop, if present, shall be chairman of every such meeting, and in his absence a chairman shall be elected from amongst those present." That clause 9 of the said recited ordinance be repealed; That clause 10 be repealed, and 'in lieu of it be substituted — " The members of the Church residing in each district shall on the first day of January (or ifthat day happen on a Sunday, then on the second of January) in each year, ele nt, by a majority of votes to be ascertained as hereinafter mentioned,' two lay persons, being communicants of the Church of England, and resident in the district, to be Trustees for the purposes of this Ordinance, and at such election every member of the Church as hereinbefore defined shall be entitled to vote in manner following", that i? to say, by delivering at the residence of the incumbent of the district, or elsewhere in the district as the gincumbeut may appoint [or in the event of the incumbent declining to act, then at the residence of such person as he shall nominate to act as returning-officev), a paper setting forth in writing the name or names of the person or persons for whom he wishes to record his vote, signed by himself, and such incumbent (or returning-officer)'shall within seven days thereafter communicate the result of the election to the Secretary or clerk of the board of Trustees staling the names of the person or persons elected, and the numbers polled for each candidate, and the Trustees so elected shall continue to hold office until the nest annual election. This ordinance shall be entitled, and may be cited as the Church Property .'rust Amendment Ordinance, Sess. , No.
