The Lyttelton Times.
We have received intelligence from England to the 9th April, and from Malta to the 13th April, to which we.devote our columns. We understand that Mr. Godley has been appointed to an important office in the WaiDepartment. . There is no news of any interest from Wellington. The " Independent " urges the Southern" members under present circumstances not to proceed to Auckland. The " Spectator " of course takes the opposite view of the question. One paper from Taranaki, the " Herald" of the 11th July, gives as discouraging an account as ever of tbe state of the natives. The fighting is going on and Katatore has declared all possibility of peace to be at an end. New barracks have "arrived at Taranaki from Melbourne, which will cost £6,000, but no orders have reached the Province from the General Government as to their erection.
We have not space to-day to notice the Conceit given yesterday evening- by the Lvttelton Choral Society. We will do so on Saturday.
