The Lyttelton Times.

Wednesday, July 25.

A Letter from Mr. Fitz Gerald to the Electors of Lyttelton, which we publish below, draws public attention to some startling facts connected with the statement of the accounts of the General Government published by the Auditor-General. It deeply concerns the future good Government of New Zealand that the authors of the present financial state of the country should be visited with condign punishment. That no difference should be made between good and bad servants of the Crown on their removal from office is the most dangerous precedent that could be established. The Auditor-General's accounts are grossly .incorrect —incorrect as they are—they are sufficient to lay a very serious charge at the -door of the Colonial Treasurer ; and if advantage should be now taken, of the uncertainty arising from a change of Governors and a change of system (an uncertainty which will prevent the attendance of a large number of the General Assembly), to pass a Bill through the House granting pensions to the retiring officers without enquiry ; then it is to be hoped that the first act of the new Governor will be to refuse his assent to a bill obtained in a manner so inconsistent with a fair and upright policy.-

We would especially draw our readers' attention to the peculiarly tieaclierous conduct of the General Government towards this Province, which Mr. Fitz Gerald has pointed out in his letter to the Electors.
