WELLINGTON.
The steamer Nelson, Captain Martin, sailed for Auckland, on the 7th inst., with 250 packages merchandise, aud 25 passengers. We understand that this is to be the last trip of the Nelson to Auckland, unless she is purchased by the merchants of that Province. Peremptory instructions have been received by Messrs. Alfred Fell and Co., Nelson, from Messrs. 11. B. Willis and Co., to dispose of the steamer jS elson, for the sum of £13,000 ; but if that anuunt could not be obtained, she was to be despatcl ed
to England forthwith. It is said that no bonus from the Government would induce the owners of the J^elson to continue running their vessel, as heretofore, between the various Provinces in New Zealand. It is also stated that the Nelson is now worth 25 per cent, more in London, than what she originally cost in building, viz. £13,000. We understand that the amount collected in this Province in aid of the British Patriotic and Hospital Funds will be forwarded to England by fthe "Titan." The total amount of subscriptions advertised in aid of the Patriotic Fund, is £1,542 Bs. 8d„ and for the Hospital Fund, £967 Bs. lid., which added to £272 19s 4d., the amount already forwarded by His Honor the Superintendent, makes a gross total of £2,783 16s. lid. The returns, however, have not yet been received from Wanganui; and we should think that, when they are added to the other amounts, the sum subscribed by tbe inhabitants of this Province will not fall short of £3,000 ; a very liberal contribution on the part of the colonists, considering the large demands they have lately bad upon their finances for other purposes. — Wellington Independent.
