The doctrine of the Immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary has been confirmed by the Pope in Council, and henceforth becomes an article of faith of the Roman Catholic Church. This proceeding-, i:i our enlightened 19th century, lias been received with undisguised expressions of honor in England. The manner in which'the announcement was made excited almost as much polemical wrath as the annoucement itself. " Mary," writes the Univers, " lias been conceived immaculate; it is the faith of the church, whoever denies it is a heretic! Mary is a Christ commenced! Mary was conceived immaculate in order to give a blood sufficiently pure to cleanse the world." Upon this Dr. dimming, the sturdy opponent of the Church of Rome, .observes :—"The Romish hierarchy seems bent on exhausting the resources of fanaticism, imposture, and blasphemy. The dogma they have discovered is bad enough, but the language in which they proclaim the new discovery is really shocking.— Home News.
