Rk-capture of the Prisoner Mackenzie. —The rumour which reached us late on Friday evening respecting the capture of Mackenzie turns out to be correct. It appears that the police had tracked ihe prisoner along the foot of the hills by Mr. C. Wilson's, taking the plains in the direction of Mr. Lake's station, evidently making his way to the south. He called at Mr. Lake's station about 7 o'clock on Friday morning, apparently exhausted, as the men were sitting down to breakfast. Several friends of Mr. Lake's happened to be visiting him, some of whom immediately recognized Mackenzie. He was at once arrested, but allowed to refresh himself. Afterwards he was bound and laid in a dray, and brought on towards the port by Mr. C. Eussell and some of the workmen. About midway between Mr. Lake's station and Christchurch, Mackenzie managed to free himself from the rope and attempted an escape. Mr. Russell called upon him to stop, but as he paid no heed to the warning, Mr. Russell fired, and wounded him in the thigh and back. Mackenzie hesitated for a moment, putting his hand to his thigh, but again started off at a great pace. One of the men accompanying Mr. Russell then unharnessed one of the horses from the dray, and literally run Mackenzie down. He was then rebound and brought on to Christchurch on the dray, from whence he was conducted by the police to the gaol in Lyttelton. Christchurch. —The Autumnal Show of the Christchurch horticultural and Agricultural Society took place on Saturday last in the Cricket Club House. The exhibition was very satisfactory in many of its features, but we have still to lament the paucity of interest which the Agriculturists entertain on this subject. We confess ourselves at a loss to account for this strange apathy in a matter which is of so much interest to them, and which has been attended with most exceedingly beneficial results in England. The samples were certainly very good of their kind. There was but little room for competition in the strain crops ; only three samples of red wheat, 3 of white, 2 of barley, and 2of peas, were shewn. Now, judging from the quantity of fine samples which have already come under our notice, this is really astonishing. Of the root crops, generally, there was considerable competition, and certainly some enormous bulbs were exhibited. We subjoin a list of the prizes, and can only express the hope that the praiseworthy exertions of the committee will meet with better encouragement next year. The Judges in the Root Crops, and for Butter and Cheese were—the Rev. J. Aylmer, Mr. J. T. Brown, and Mr. Bridge, with the addition of the Rev.^W. WiLLocKfor the samples of Butter.
