CANTERBURY RACES.

Wakefield, Esq., G. Devon, Esq.' W. C. Fendall, Esq. ■ Judge.—C. C. Haslewood, Esq. Clerk of the Course.—Mr. Rule. These races, the first that hive taken place in this settlement under the auspices of the Jockey Club, passed over satisfactorily. Tuesday opened most propitiously, and the attendance on the course was numerous. The lacing came off as follows :— The Hurdle Race for £30. Added to a sweepstakes of £2 each. Two miles and a distance- 3 subs. Mr. J. S. Caverhill's gr. g. War Eagle. 6 vis- - list. (Leach) „. ... 3 Mr. J. D. Biittin's b. g. Lord Raglan, 6 yi's*. list, (owiiei) i## #w 2 Mr. F. Fox's b. g. the latter soon taking the lead, and winning cleverly. The Canterbury Cup, value £50. Added to a sweepstakes of £4 each. Heats, two miles. 4 subs. Mr. G. W. H. Lee's bl. g. Tamerlane, aged, list. (Owner) 1 Mr. J. Pattison's b. m. Lady Gladstone, 6 yrs., list, (Hilton) 2 Mr. Mullock's Crimea, 6 yrs., list. M'Donald 2 Mr. Biakiston's Boomerang, 6 yrs., 11 st. (Young) 0 Tamerlane won the first heat, distancing Crimea and Boomerang, Lady Gladstone just saving her distance. The secoud heat Tamerlane walked over. The back Race for £20. Added to a sweepstakes of £1 each; Mile Heats. 10 subs. Mr. Turner's Charlie, (Jannaway) ... 1 1 Mr. Cridland's Nina, (Leach) 2 2 Mr. Back's Grimaldi, (M'Donald) ... 3 0 Mr. Perceval's Chester, (Fox) 0 0 Charlie won both heats easily. Wednesday, March 7. Notwithstanding the chilliness ofthemornJng, there was a fair sprinkling on the course, and the day passed off well. The Ladies' Purse for £40. Added to a sweepstakes of £b each. 3 miles. Gentlemen riders. 3 subs. Mr. Turner's Cruiskeen, aged, lOst. Fendall 1 Mr. Lee's Tamerlane, a<red, lost, (owner) ... 2 Mr. Pattison's Lady Gladstone, 6 yrs," lOst. (Hilton) ... '. pulled up Mr. Turner presented the Purse for the erection of a stand for the convenience of the Ladies. Galloway Race for £10. Added to a sweepstakes of 10s. each for galloways not above 14 hands high. Mile heats. 2 subs. Mr. Ashby's Isabella JSercus, (Jannaway) 1 1 Mr. Rule's Young Charlie, (owner) ..." 2 2 Consolation Slakes. Of £2 each, with £25 added, handicapped by the stewards, two miles-and a distance. 2 subs. Mr. T?nttison'sLady'Gladstone, 6 yrs. 10 st. 7lbs. (Hilton) 1 Mr. Fox's Honi Heki, aged, lOst. II lbs. (Leach) ... ... 2 This was decidedly the best race of the day. Honi Heki making smart running for the first mile, when Lady Gladstone gradually drew ahead, and keeping the lead, won cleverly by a length. A Match also followed between * Mr. H. S. Brown's Dinah, (Fendall) ... 1 Mr. J. T. Brown's Taiepo, (Young) .. 2 A Match for one mile between Mr. Turner's Charlie, (Jannaway) 1 Mr. Higgins' Rob Roy, (Hilton) 2 A Scurry Race, which afforded great amusement, wound up the sports'of the day -. distance, 5 mile, 16 subs, of os. each, won by Sir W. Congreve's b. g. (Fendall) 1
