LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

Immigration —■ We understand that letters have been received by the Provincial Government from the Immigration agent in London. He hoped to despatch a ship by about the middle of December. . The premises lately occupied as the Lyttelion Anns, have been iented by Governmeiit and fitted up as Immigration barracks; According to the arrangements between the Government and the owners pf tlie Z.ingari, we raay expect immigrants from Melbourne almost daily. Wesleyan Chapel.—-The new chapel, built" by the Wesjeyans, was opened for Divine Service on Sunday morning last, when the Rev. J. Aldred preached to a large congregation. Services were also held in the afternoon and evening of the same day. Collections were made after each service, which we understand amounted to about £12. On Monday evening a tea meeting was held in the Cluipel, at : wliich"- above \ 150 persons were present. Several addresses \yere delivered. •;',■ / " ' . ' Cricket.—A match came off on Wednesday the 28th Feb. between the Ciinstchurch and Raugioia clubs, on the ground of tiie latter. The day ; was very fine, but owing to the wet weather that preceded it, each side only mustered.lo players. The score will shew that the bowlings and fieldings were superior to the bat- ■ tings .'pu both sides. The match which was won by Raiigiora did great credit to the younger club. Their energy in geuing up cricket so far;

f up the country, will give a spirit to this thorough English game, which" it is to.he hoped will not flag. A return mutch is to be played on Friday, on the ground of the Christchurch cricket club. It appears from reports received from Wel.lington that shocks of earthquakes are still being experienced there. We extremely regret receiving this information, and sincerely trust many of the reports in circulation will be found to be exaggerated. It is a matter of great congratulation that this province is exempted from these visitations. To re-assure our friends in England and elsewhere, we would again call attention to the fact that on the evening when Wellington sustained-so much injury, the vibration here did not occasion ihe slightest injury, not even to the breaking of a chimney ornament. It does appear that. the principal seat of these disturbances is confined to the neighbourhood of Cook's Straits; for we learn from some old settlersand from the natives, that the earthquakes that occurred both in 1841 and 1848 were but slightly felt in this district.
