In deference to the request of several electors,' I have the honor to offer myself to your noticeas a Candidate for a seat in the Provincial Council upon this occasion. , In the brief limits of an address you will not expect me to enter into a general explanation oft my principles; but if I am considered worthy ;o,9k\'-beconiin^-^oue''v'uf;;ypur.\'>epresentativeSv,:l' vihalj endeavour, to the best of my ability, to promote your interests by. a faithful and independent discharge of the trust you will confide to me. I should ad vocate the utmost economy in the public expenditure consistent with the efficiency of the several departments of the Provincial -'..'Government,, to which I should cheerfully extend my support, if the measures it proposed were calculated to pronaote the welfare of the settlement.. ..-'.-..■ In reference to the question which is now prominently before the public,. (I mean the appropriation ofvthe W"aste Lands,) I should support the principle contained in the scheme proposed by the Government, but in the regulations themselves I should advocate certain, modifications, and particularly I should labour to secure that a. certain portion of the rate proposed to be created for provincial kre venue shall be set apart for the promotion of education and the extension of Christianity; not for the endpivinent of the Church of England, because I believe that stale endowments for any particular religious community are attended with serious evil, but for the creation of a fund from which, in the primitive state of our settlement, aid could be extended to all Christian denominations in their just proportion for the extension of religious truth, v ', As soon as I am relieved from the pressing duties of the season, I shall seek an opportunity of meeting you, when I shall be happy to afford you a fuller explanation of my views.
