Five, has been directed to .7me, John Watson, Esq., as Returning-Olficer for the district of Akaroa, in the said Province, requiring and -commanding* me to "cause to be elected by and from amongst the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in manner and (form by law prescribed, Two Persons\o serve as members of the Provincial Council for the district of Akaroa* Now therefore I, the said John Watson, Esq., Returning-Officer for the district of Akaroa, do heveby, in pursuance of the said recited Writ, give notice, that a public meeting of the electors of the. aforesaid district will beheld at Akaroa, in the PoJice;office, on Friday, the 16th day of March, at noon, for the purpose of nominating Two Persons to serve as members of the Provincial Council for the district of Akaroa, and in the event of a poll being demanded.for-the candidates, or either of them, such polling shall take place on Saturday, the 17th day of March in the Police Office at Akavoa. , The voting to commence at any time after nine o'clock, a.m., and to close at 4 o'clock, p.m., of the same day. ; V;.' Gentlemen,— '- '..''■ •.'.;. .• I AM induced at tlie suggestion of several friends to offer myself as a Candidate-fora seat in the Provincial Council in consequence of the proposed enlargement of that body. I do so with much diffidence and; with a perfect willingness to retire should any gentlemen of superior pretensions present themselves. If not, and if you should think proper to elect me, I cau promise you that as'l have no private interest to serve, I shall carry into the Council a perfect independence and a determination to support such measures, and such measures only, as I conscientiously believe will be for the benefit ofour common country. Gentlemen, AT the request of several of your number, I beg to offer myself as a Candidate for the honor of representing you in the Provincial Council. I have come to this resolution after much hesitation, being aware that in comparison with many others,.! can offer but few claims on your suffrages. The urgent.solicilatibn.s which have been made to me, however, and the offers of sup- ; port which I have received, have overcome the ".reluctance I fell to the "adoption of a course which I was at first inclined to consider presumptuous. 'Should you dome the honor to return me as one of your representatives, I shall give my unremitting attention to the duties devolving upon me, supporting to the utmost of my ability such measures as I conceive likely to be conducive to the interests of the colonists at large, and giving my unswerving opposition to those which appear to have an opposite tendency. I trust I shall be able before the day of election, to visit the greater part of the District for the purpose of giving such explanations as you may require, relative to my views ou the more important subjects likely to come before the Council.
