CHRISTCHURCH.
.An adjourned-meetingof the Colonist's Society took place at the White Hart on Tuesday Evening^ the 20th. J: Brittan, Esq/i in the chair. JThe discussion upon tbe Waste Lands Regulations was for the./sixthtimei resumed. Mr. Inwood objected to the confirrriation of the minutes upon the ground that the resolution which ; had been submitted by Mr. Oilirier and which the meeting carried, was the same in ■effect as the resolution which at a. previous period of the evening they had:rejected. He thought the whole course of their proceedings was irregular. Mr. Ollivier reminded Mr. inwood that there had been a very substantial alteration made in the last, resolution, the first merely affirmed the principle contained in the payment of a fixed sum for the fee simple of the land, an? a rate in aid of revenue, but did riot define what either of these should be or how to be paid. In that form Mr. Inwood had objected to it, and moved" that the price of the land should he £3 payable in one'sum. This proposal was rejected", and then it was be renewed the general terms of his first resolutions which went so far as to affirm the fundamental principle of the Government measure; but in renewing it, he added the words "10s. per acre for tbe fee simple, and 50 s . per acre for the purpose of revenue;" and this he conceived was a marked alteration in its character; it pledged those who supported it to a sum, which before was left entirely open. In this form Mr. Ollivier reminded Mr. Inwood that he had voted for the resolution which he now objected to. After a lengthened discussion upon precedents, the question was finally put from the chair, " that the minutes be not "confirmed." Negatived. Mr- Olliyiei was then called upon to resume the discussion on the Government regulations, and proceeded to read that portion which applied to the Public reserves. The regulations appeared to give a voice to the Provincial Council in all reservations, except those which had reference to tlie public .high ways, footpaths, &c., and in these cases the authority of the Superintendent appeared 6Bpreine., He ;.con'si-
dered this objectionable, and finally .proposed: the following addition to ithe ■ 3rd clause. " Such reservations shall >be; made juiownto.jtlnrPro--vinbial Council within ten days of its assembling if not then sitting. But such reserve shall cease to be so reserved upon a resolution of the .Provincial Council to.-that-effect passed within 28 days after its re-assembling."; A great deal of discussion arose upon the; subject in which Mr. Fooks,.Mr. Bealey./Mr. Iriyvood, Mr, Hall, and :• Mr. Hichens took part, but tlie resolution was finally .agreed to. The further consideration of the subject was then adjourned to Tuesday March the 6th. There was a large gathering at the Market Dinner table, on Saturday last, occasioned by the near advent of the elections. The greater 11 umber of the candidates were present, bent ou canvassing. Nothing occurred worthy; of particular notice, if we except a requisition to the stockownerstoconvene a meeting-for the pur-, pose of submitting their, opinions upon;the proposed pasturage regulations to public considerations. Themeetiug was fixed for Tuesday evening, March Bth^ at 6 o'clock. A_vequisitir>n was also numerously signed, directed to Mr. W. Guise Brittan, requesting him to come forward as a candidate for the Chiistchurch Country ■District.'.
