WELLINGTON.

On Monday hist a public mooting was conTcned by advertisement at the Mechanics'.lnstitute, v for the purpose of expressing the mutual sympathy of all classes ot the inhahitants of this colony for the sufferings occasioned by the iTceut earthquakes; for ascertaining1 with some degree ol accuracy their extent; and to endeavour to re-inspire confidence for the future ;" but the attendance was so small, that it was thought advisable to adjourn the meeting; and it was iidjmmied accordingly to the Bth inst. The adjourned meeting was to commence at 7 o'clock, hut at 8 o'clock there were only about 30 persons in the room, and it was thought by some that the meeting would have again to be adjourned. During the evening^ however, the room began to fill, and the business was proceeded with. Several speeches were delivered by gentlemen present, and the following resolutions were carried nem. con. A. Hart, Esq., in the chair. Ist Resolution, proposed by Henry St. Hill, Esq., R.M., M.L.C. Seconded hy Rev. Arthur Baker. 1. "That it is the opinion of this meeting, it is the duty of the people of this Province to observe a day of Public Humiliation and Thanksgiving to Almighty God for his-mercies vouchsafed to them during the recent earthquake; and that the Superintendent of " the Province be requested to appoint a day for the purpose." Carried unanimously. 2nd Resolution,-proposed by Robert Hart, E<q., M.G.A. Seconded by E. J. Wakelield, 3sq., M.G.A. 2. "That si .Memorial he prepared and prelented to His Honor the Superintendent praying him to lecoinmeiid to the Provincial Council the requisite measures for establishing a Commission to enquire into and ascertain the nature and <xient of the damages in the district of Wellington, occasioned by the late earthquake; and to colled and report upon such evidence as they m.-iv be able to obtain of the best methods of building to resist the ordinary operations of the shocks, at the same time guarding against the danger of.lire." Carried unanimously. 3rd Resolution, proposed by J. C. Raymond, Esq., J.P. Seconded by John King, Esq.

3. " Tliat the chairman lie requested to write to Colonel M'Cleverlv, the senior Military Officer of lliis Province, asking hi in to receive iot himself, and to communicate to Col. Gold, the officers and men of the 65 th regiment, ami the officers of the Engineer and Ordnance department, stationed in Wellington, the thanks •of this meeting for the sympathy shown, and great assistance rendered in the town since the earthquake of the 23rd January, 1555." Esq., J.P, . 4. <; That this meeting- is of opinion (hat the conduct of tlie masters of vessels who so kindly offered shelter and accommodation to the inhabitants of this town during- the temporary alarm ■' created by the shock of earthquake on the 23rd January last, and their ready assistance uiid attention to such as were desirous to avail themselves of it, is deserving of grateful recognition, and this meeting requests the chairman 'V& convey to those gentlemen its cordial thanks." :' t Carried unanimously.
