The Lyttelton Times.
Wednesday, December 20, 1854.
We subjoin Captain Drury's report upon the Suinner Bar. It is such a one asSvas to be expected, from the opinions expressed before by men who were competent to form a judgment on the subject. We presume that Government will again propose the vote of £10.000 for the Suraner Road, and that the Provincial Council will take the earliest opportunity of passing a vote for the undertaking, now that they have satisfied themselves about the Sumner Bur. That reason for delay has at least been set at rest,. No
one would be so mad as to wish to see public money risked in pursuit of his own crotchets, in direct opposition to the advice of so experienced a surveyor as Captain Drury. Small steamers will be able to carry on the traffic in fair weather. The road will be wanting to keep up constant communication at all times.
The news from Melbourne gives hopes of a speedy and abundant supply of labour from that quarter. The Zingari, which made her appearance in our harbour the other day is only, as we understand, the precursor of a considerable communication between Port Philip and the Southern Provinces of New Zealand.
