LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The dull foggy weather of Thursday was considerably enlivened by the chase of a whale in this harbour. Early in the day this visitor from the deeps was observed sporting about the Bay, and shortly afterwards two boats started in pursuit ; the chase was continued for more than three hours, though without capturing the monster. Several times the whale rose near the boats, and once sufficiently so to afford a fair mark, but the harpoon was not thrown with force enough to hold. He is supposed to have been a bull of the " black " species, and would have proved a prize worth winning, the yield of oil and bone being calculated at something about £300.
Resident Magistrate's Court, Christchurch, August 17. — John Willis, of the Heathcote river, was committed for trial this day on a charge of having stolen a packet of gloves from the person of Mr. J. E. Thacker, at an Auction Sale at Mr. Swinbourne's Store, Christchurch, on the 16th inst. The prisoner was admitted to bail.
