The Lyttelton Times. Wednesday, August 16, 1854.
We have just received, per " Catherine Ann," one number of the " Wellington Independent," (Aug. 9,) containing a summary of news from Auckland by the overland mail. This cutter was in such a crazy state that the mail was not put on board, but we may expect it now every day in the " Prima Donna," which was to have sailed on the 12th inst. The *' Norman Morrison" has arrived at Wellington with a lai'ge mail for this Province. The steamer "Queen1' has also arrived from Sydney, but brings no later European intelligence than we have already got.
We will publish a summary of "Auckland news on' Saturday. Nothing of any importance had been done in the Legislative Council. In the House of Representatives the Revenue Bill has been passed; and the "Waste Lands," and "Empowering," Bills have been read a second time and committed. Mr. Wakefield offered a strenuous opposition to the second reading of the Waste Lands' Bill. It was carried however by a majority of 20 to 10. Mr. Wakefield was continuing his opposition to it in Committee. On the 26th July, a division had taken place upon an amendment proposed by -hi'ni to reserve from the control of the Provincial Governments certain portions of land as " Working Settlers' land." The amendment was negatived by a majority of 20 to 10. No great change appears to have taken place since we last heard with respect to the formation of parties.
