ON Wednesday, May 24th, a Public Regatta will take place], at Lyttelton, when prizes will be competed for in the following races. Ist. The Victoria stakes, open to all decked sailing vessels from 8 to 20 tons (inclusive) engaged in the carrying trade of this port. Entry, 21s. 2nd. The Provincial stakes, for open sailing boats under S tons. Entry 10s. 3rd. A Rowing match, for 5 oared boats with steersman. Entry 10s. 4th. A Rowing match by Maories in .5 oared boats, with steersman. Entry os. sth. A Rowing match, in 4 oared boats with steersman. Entry ss. 6th. A Dingy race, by one man with pair of sculls. Entry 2s.*6d. 7th. A scull Dingy kace to be sculled from the stern. Entry 2s. 6d. Bth. A Duck hunt with dingy to be chased by two 4 oared boats without a steersman. The duck to have five minutes start, and the duck to be caught by the bow oarsman. The hunt not to exceed 20 minutes. 9th. Jumping in sacks. The sports to be regulated by the following rules. Ist. The order in which the sailing matches take place to be determined by reference to the quarter from which the wind is- blowing at the time of starting. 2nd. Any vessel fouling another to lose all chance of the prize, to be decided as follows ; — Ist. When two boats are on different tacks the one on the larboard tack fouls. 2nd. When two boats are on the same tack the leeward boat fouls. 3. When one boat is on a wind and the other going fore, the boat going fore fouls. Sailing boats to start from the jetty and sail twice round the usual course. Rowing boats to start from the jetty round the boat moored off D.impier's bay jjnd the punt off officers' point, back to Dainpier's bay, and again round the punt to the jetty. The Dingy race with two sculls to start from the jetty, round the boat off Dainpier's bay, (twice round). The sculling match the same course (once round). All boats to carry a distinguishing flag, to be specified at the time of entry. The jumping in sacks to'be performed from Heaphy's inn to the corner of Canterbury St. and back. Intending competitors must give their names the night previous, as sacks will be provided. In the event of any boats being prevented entering from special circumstances at the time specified, a disc.etionary power to rest with the Committee either to refuse or permit such boats to enter. The Umpire in all cases to be chosen by the parties entering. No start to take place unless there be three competitors, except the Dingy race, in which four will be required to start. " The Committee find on reference to the minutes of last year's Regatta it was resolved not to allow sailing boats having won two consecutive years to enter ; it has been decided to allow such boats to enter under regulations to be explained at the time of entry. All boats entered for the rowin<>- matches to be alongside the jetty by 9 o'clock," and all boats entered for the sailing matches to be made fast to the warp from the jetty by 11 o'clock. Entries to be made between 7 and 9 o'clock Tuesday evening the 23rd, at the Mitre Hotel. The sports will commence .t 10 o'clock precisely.
