So much damage has been caused to crops and gardens by loose horses depasturing about the town of Christchurch, that the Magistrates have directed the police and poundkeeper to impound all animals found within the limits of the town, according to the provisions of the latest ordinances for the province of New Munster. As the poundage fee amounts to ss. a night, we have no doubt that this proceeding will so.on abate a great nuisance. We are glad to be able to announce that His Honor the Superintendent has been to apply £200 to the repair, which is .so greatly needed, of the Riccarton and Papanui roads, and that the works are to commence forthwith. We only fear that this sum may be inadequate to the effectual execution of the work, but all who remember the vast amount of inconvenience and expense resulting last winter from the almost impassable state of these roads, will no doubt agree that the money, so far as it goes, could not have been better applied. A sad accident occurred at Christchurch, on Saturday, to the second son of Sir T. Tancred, who, whilst playing with other children about a mangle, got one of his fingers caug-ht by the cog wheels, by which it was so much injured that it was found necessary to remove it entirely, which, under the effects of chloroform, was skilfully done by Di\ Barker, and we are happy to learn the child is recovering favourabty. This should be a warning to all who may have mangles to sucure them as far as possible, either by taking off the handle when not in use, or by some other means, from being touched by children. A strange story has reached us from Ak&roa. All the facts will soon come to light, as we understand they will be brought before the Court of the Commissioner of Crown Lands. It is said on good authority that one of the French whalers has brought out papers relating to M. de Belligny's laud, which were supposed for some time to have been lost; and which will not only seriously affect the claims, but also the character of a person notorious at Akaroa.
