To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times. Sib,—Mr. Sewell's letter appears to me unsatisfactory, because— Ist. He remains silent on the subject respecting which information is more anxiously looked for than on any other; viz.,his intentions with respect to the Town Reserves, &c. 2nd. He leaves us in the dark as to the present resting-place of the Bishopric Fund, concerning which extraordinary rumours prevail. 3rd. He evades the universal demand for enlightenment as to the financial position of the Canterbury Association. No one ever asked for " four folio ledgers" of accounts, but every one is asking for an intelligible abstract of them, a balance-sheet in fact, such as the pocket-book of any man of' business, or even of a greal Constitutional lawyer, could furnish. Whatever liabilities have been judiciously and necessarily incurred by. Mr. Sewell and his colleagues in the real service of the Canterbury Settlement, the latter is, it appears to me, bound in honour to relieve them from, at whatever sacrifice ; but I trust that such a step will not even be thought of until the substance of those dreadful K folios" has been published and thoroughly ventilated. Mr. Sewell having already volunteered a partial explanation, I cannot see why a more complete statement need be deferred until the very uncertain period for the assembling of the Provincial Council. Yours truly, A Modern Pilgrim. Christchurch, March 2nd.
