WELLINGTON.
Dr. Featherstone has written the following laconic note to the Independent: — " To the Proprietors of the Independent. " Gentlemen, —Will you do Die the favour to announce, that I have ceased lo be a Contributor to the Independent. " I am, Gentlemen, your obedient servant, " I. E. FI3ATHEI!STON.G." Onr contemporary feels convinced that'"this announcement will be received by every settler with feelings of. regret; while those who have fought side by side with him in the severe battle for Eepresentative Institutions would be disposed to view his retirement as a serious public calamity, if the battle in -which he and they'iiave been engaged were not already won. As. the speedy possession of these is certain, the prime object for which he devoted to the public service his time, energy, and talents is achieved ; he therefore feels justified in retiring into private life, which his increased professional duties, as well as other circumstances, have rendered at the present time more than ever necessary." [We cordially coincide with our contemporary in bearing testimony to the great services Dr. Featherstou has rendered to the colonists.]
