We have Auckland and Otago papers to the Ist May. We observe nothing of particular moment in their columns. The Wellington Independent has received a copy of the Southern Cross of the 4th May, which contains an important message of, the Lieutenant Governor to the Auckland Corporation, in reply.to a memorial from that body. It.meets with the approbation of the Southern Cross, which thinks that "the only course left for the Corporation to pursue, is to suspend its functions until the Charter shall have undergone at the hands of the forthcoming Legislative Council, that modification and amendment, for which a majority of its Councillors have pronounced, and in aid of which the Lieutenant Governor has promised to give due weight." The Witness and Wellington Spectator have had a tiff. The former returns the compliment of dullness brought against it by the latter, which, in return, states it " has ceased to receive any numbers of the " Witless," as it is humorously designated at Otago," and discontinues sending the Spectator. We hazard a prophecy that these ink-belligerents will embrace, should they happen to meet, and will, like Lockit and Peachem, mutually exclaim " Brother, Brother, we are both in the wrong."
