To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times. ■-■<•• Sir, —What strange ideas the Committee selected to manage the Sports on Monday last must have on the subject of boating! Was ever su*S an absurd proposition made to the Captain of a boat as that his coxswain should have attained the full age of 21 years ! It is generally considered in England that the lighter the coxswain the better; if the Committee are of opinion that he should be a person of good substantial weight and arrived at years of discretion,! should very much like to see them all, with their heaviest man as coxswain, pull over a four mile course at racing pace, with a good head wind all the way. However, as it is not unlikely that some of the same gentlemen may be on a similar committee next year, I hope, if they are, they will have the goodness to mention in their rules the required age of the coxswains or steersmen, as, without this being specified, we may expect to hear that some boat was not allowed to race because the coxswain was " aged." I remain, Sir, Your most obedient servant, R. J. S. Hakman. P.S. Will the. Committee be kind enough to state what weight they deem necessary for a steersman ? Would sixteen stone answer their purpose ? I put this query as in the next Regatta it may obviate the necessity of deciding ivho is a man and what is a boy.
