CHRISTCHURCH.

(From our Correspondent.)

On Friday the 30th ult., a Cricket Match was played in Hagley Park. Several of those who had engaged to play on that day were not present : and therefore at about 1 p.m., Mr. Godley and Mr. Brittan again tossed up, and chose sides from among the gentlemen present. The following are the particulars of the game, which only consisted of one innings, owing to the late hour of assemblage. There were only ten iplayers on each side, the in side giving a fielder :— Dickenson, .b. by Boys, .24 C. Bowen,. .c. by Godley,-b. by Sidebottom, 0 C. C. But the whole attendance only amounted to a dozen persons; of whom onehalf had disappeared before any one took the chair. The Council, (although requested by the Society.cf Land-purchasers, at its last meeting, to take all requisite measures for ascertaining the sense of the inhabitants as to the proposed organization of a general Society) appears to have taken no step, with regard to Christehurch, beyond the insertion of an anonymous advertisement in the Lyttelton Times. Not a single handbill had been posted: and the fact, that no names were attached to the notice calling a meeting, rend.ered everybody suspicious of tbe originators of the movement, and of the object proposed. Moreover, the hour fixed upon, noon, is nearly the most unsuitable for all classes, that could be chosen. Mr. Packer was in the chair, and after a very short discussion, a resolution was carried to this effect: That, in consequence of tbe smallness of the attendance at this meeting, the following requisition be inserted in next Saturday's paper ; to be signed by those present and any other persons who may choose to do so. " We the undersigned inhabitants of Christchurch and its vicinity, earnestly request our fellow-colonists to assemble in public meeting on Tuesday the llthMay, at 6 o'clock in the evening, at the White Hart Inn, for the purpose of considering the proposal, originated by the Land Purchaser's Society, that a Society should be constituted of all the inhabitants of the settlement, as a means of ascertaining at any time the opinions of the colonists on all matters of public interest." (See advertiseiiieni.) On Tuesday night, Mr. and Mrs. Watts Russell gave a ball to a numerous party of their friends. The cottagers along the Riccarton road must have been surprised at the number of drays, spring-carts, horsemen, and footpassengers, proceeding to the scene of festivity. All this week, Christehurch has been enlivened by tbe presence of several large flocks of sheep and heads of cattle, on their way from the port to the interior of the country.
