EASTER MONDAY AT CHRISTCHURCH.
The announcement of races on this Old English holiday caused a goodly muster of men and horses in Hagley Park about one o'clock. The following is an account of the day's proceedings :— The Tbadesmexs' Plate of One Pound each, with 81. 15s. added from the fund, for all horses that .have never won a race in Canterbury, or been trained. Heats, one mile. Catch weights. Mr. Cummings's g.g., There-he-flies 5 years, Bentley . . .13 1 Mr. Doughty's r.g., Driver, 5 years, Pye . . . '. 2 dr. 0 Mr. Read's bl.m., Black Bess, 6 years, Sullivan 3 12 Mr. Cass's bl.m., Lucy Neal, 4 years, Martin 4 dr. 0 Mr. Tribe's g.ra., Maggie, aged, Leech . . . . t 5 2 dr. Four heats were really run for this race ; but There-he-flies having struck a flag soon after starting- the second time, and came in first, the stewards decided that that heat should count for nothing. He won the first heat easily : in the second he was restive at starting, and* lost a furlong, but made up his ground wonderfully, and came in a good third, the four horses being well together at the winning post. He won the last easily by half a length. The Canterbury St. LEGER,of One Pound each, with 10/. added from the fund, open to all horses ; weight for age. Any horse having won a race in the Canterbury settlement to carry 7 lbs. extra. H eats, two miles. Mr. G. Lee's bl-g. Tamerlane,aged, list. 7 lbs., Owner. . 11 Messrs. Gartner and Ellis's b.g., Orlando, 6 years, list., Pye . dist. Mr. Eeeves's eh.m., Nine JBhiis, aged, list, Bentley . . 2 2 Tamerlane won both heats almost in a canter, Orlando was distanced for passing inside a flag, but had no chance of the heat. The in are never had a chance at all
Match for £5 a side. One mile. Mr. G. Lee's b.m., Countess, 3 years, Owner . . -g. 1 j Mr. Boy's bl.g., Smoker, 4 years, Bentley . . . . . 2 Won easily by several lengths. Cart Horse Race, for ten shillings each, with 61. ss. added from the fund, for horses that have been regularly worked in harness during the last three mouths. Owners to ride. One mile. Mr. Read's b.g. Prince ... 1 Mr. Disher's wh.g. Washington . 2 Mr. Allen's b.m. Polly ... 3 The race was twice run; Prince having crossed Washington the first time. The course has been much improved by levelling since the last races; and the run in is in a more convenient spot, and was roped for the first time. Two or three of the jockeys were in full racing costume; several hundred spectators were in attendance, and appeared to enjoy the sport well. No accident or disorderly conduct took place.
In the evening about eighty ladies and gentlemen assembled in the Ball-room, near the Golden Fleece Hotel. Nearly one-half of this number were of the fair sex. The arrangements had been exceedingly well made, under the auspices of four lady patronesses, and a Committee of twelve gentlemen : dancing was kept up with great spirit from eight o'clock until nearly 4. Among the company were Mr. and Mrs. Godley, Captain and Mrs. Simeon, Mr. and Mrs. Russell, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Cookson, Captain, Mrs., and the Misses Westenra, (2) and the Misses Wakefield, Law, and Liberty, Mrs. and the Misses Paul, (3) Mrs. and the Misses Townsend, (3) Mr. and Mrs. Vigors, the Rev. H. and Mrs. Jacobs, Mrs. and Miss Jackson, Mr., Mrs., and Miss Fooks, Mr. and Mrs. Longden, the Hon. J. S. Wortley, Messrs. Fitzgerald, Hamilton, Bealey (2), Bowen (2), Fitton, Woolcombe, E. J. Wakefield, De Bourbel, S. Perceval, Creyke, Muter, Westenra, Davie, Harman, Porter (2), &c, &c.
