CHRISTCHURCH.
[Prom our Correspondent.]
On Saturday there was an auction sale, at the Golden Fleece, of the ewes and horses recently arrived in the " Fair Tasmanian" from Hobart Town. The ewes were knocked down at 15s. 3d. per head. The horses fetched from £25 to £35.
Much excitement has been caused this week by the Advertisements in last week's paper, inviting Tenders for the pasturage of the Town Reserve, Hagley Park, and Government Domain, and for the temporary occupation of the Botanical Garden. Most people are at a loss to know, by what right the Association can claim so to let out the land in question. It is rumoured that the Association have bought it as private estate, and can therefore dispose of it as they please. But then it would appear that the Association have no right to buy, as private estate, what has never been open for choice to earlier purchasers. The subject will probably engage the attention of the Land Purchasers before their Society becomes finally dissolved by the organization of the new one. Otherwise, it is sure to be discussed at the Public Meetings to be held in the course of that organization.
Intelligence was received on Saturday of the safe arrival of E. J. Lee, Esq., and E. Jollie, Esq., at Mr. Lee's run, in the Wai-au-ua plains, with 1800 sheep, from Nelson. I hear they performed the whole journey, from Nelson to the Wairau Plain, and then by the same route which Mr. Lee pursued in his former journey, in two months, with a loss of only three per cent, and with the assistance of only two men.
Mr.. A. Clifford drove his flock from Cape Campbell along the coast until he had passed the Kaikora Mountains.
