CHRIST CHURCH.
[From our Correspondent.] On Saturday His Excellency Sir George*" Grey paid a visit to this place, accompanied by Mr. Godley; he visited Mr. Brittan's and Mr. Tancred's farms, below " the Bricks;" and also proceeded through Riccartoii "HiTd Ham farms, to Mr. Bray's estate. I hear that he expressed great surprise and gratification at the progress that has been made. His Excellency returned to Lyttelton in the afternoon. His Excellency received a Deputation on Monday, at the Land Office, on the subject of the Sumner Road, and subsequently met the Magistrates residing in and near Christchurch. Besides the Resident Magistrate, the following gentlemen were present:—J. R. Godley, Esq., W. G. Brittan. Esq.; J. C. Watts Russell, Esq.; H. W. Phillips, Esq.; E. J. Wakefield, Esq. ; and W. B. IJray, Esq. I understand that some arrangements were made for the more certain and expeditious delivery of the mails here, and for the erection of a Lock-up. It was also determined that the sittings of the Supreme Court for this District should be held at Lyttelton for the present. Oil Tuesday four quarter-acre sections, fronting on a principal street near the Market Place, were sold by auction at prices averaging upwards of £30 each section. Your readers will be glad to hear that Mr. A. Clifford has succeeded in driving over about 1,500 Ewes from the Wairau district, only losing one on the road. He was at Motunau a few days ago. Two other parties of " overianders" are reported to be close on his heels, one of which is headed by E. J. Lee, Esq., who lately made so successful a journey through the mountains.
