We have been requested to publish the following correspondence relative to the memorial for a Provincial Constitution for Canterbury, with a copy of the memorial itself. " Lyttelton, Sept. 25, 1851. " Sir, —I have the honour to enclose a memorial drawn up in accordance vrith a resolution passed at two public meetings in this settlement. It is signed by 343 adult males, being very nearly the whole of the adult male population whom it has been found possible to apply to. I have made very careful inquiry, and I cannot bear of more than ten or twelve persons it the utmost, who, upon being applied to, have refused to sign it, nor have I heard of one who has assigned, as a reason for refusing, any difference of sentiment from that expressed in the memorial. It may therefore be fairly considered as speaking the unanimous opinion of the inhabitants of this settlement. A copy of the memorial has been sent to Akaroa for signature, but it has not been returned, and I think it best to foward the signatures already received without any further delay. " I am, Sir, your obedient servant, (Signed) "John Robert Godley, "Agent Canterbury Association." " The Hon. the Colonial Sei-retary."
